Being under the dictatorial rule of Danna Deville isn't great, but it's a better life than the one he was living. BADMEMORY: His worst memory was the day Meredith died. HISTORY: Hayes was born the third son of Tuomas Montgomery and the first with his lover Sheila. Tuomas was living a double lie, one with his wife Linda and the other with Sheila, who he pretended to be married to. Hayes had an interesting life growing up, doted on by his mother and barely seeing his father who had to juggle a job and two separate lives. Things were good until Sheila and Linda learned the truth when Hayes was six. Sheila was going to run off with Hayes, but Tuomas was angry and he killed her. He brought Hayes home and in fear Linda said nothing and cared for Hayes with her own children, Dow and Vance. Shortly after his arrival Linda had a daughter named Willa. They were the picture perfect happy family but Hayes was left scarred by his mother's murder. He was plagued by recurring nightmares and confused by his father who tried to drill it into his head that he hadn't killed Sheila and that she had drowned in a nearby lake and that it had all been a dream. It was such a strange tactic. Tuomas often beat his wife and his children and would drill it into their heads that nothing happened. He was a fine actor, good enough playing confused and concerned that Linda and the children thought they were going crazy. Even Hayes had to wonder sometimes if any of it really happened. Every time he showed his father a bruise, Tuomas would become furious and demand to know who had hurt his son. When Tuomas hit them again, they were reminded of their pain, but soon grew confused again as Tuomas continued on insisting that they were telling stories. He even called the police once to figure out what was going on with his family and Linda and the boys both told stories of being beaten up at school or being mugged or other such things. They even began inventing their own stories, so convinced by it all that they began imagining being hurt even without their father's encouragement. That all changed when Hayes was fifteen. In a very brutal attack, Tuomas killed Linda and it sparked memories of Tuomas killing Sheila. Hayes was furious and no matter what his father said, Hayes didn't believe him. That night, Hayes killed his father and ran away. He lived on the streets, homeless, for four years, just barely getting by. He felt insane and he probably was. He robbed stores when he needed to for food or whatever else he might need and now and then broke into houses to shower and have fresh clothes so he didn't feel like such a loser all the time. One day, while showering, the owner of one house returned and found him there. The woman was a vampire and she seduced him and changed him right after they had sex. She wanted him for her mate, but when he woke up and she told him all of these things, he was confused and scared and angry that she would lie to him as his father had. He pushed her into a fireplace and she was killed and Hayes ran away. He legally changed his name to Tanner Marston and as he went on with life, he realized that the woman had been telling the truth. He was a vampire. He lived alone, often killing residents of homes to use their things for a while before moving on. In North Carolina he met a woman named Corrine who he fell madly in love with. She was a human, but he loved her and was careful with her. The two married, but Tanner was too afraid to tell her what she was. He never got the chance. She died giving birth to their son, who he named Tucker, and he almost killed the boy for killing his mother. Instead he left his son there and left, moving on with life. He was miserable and swore off love, though he had many flings and had a few children along the way. He was a nomad and he kept moving along, surviving and getting the things he wanted and needed, but never staying anywhere for too long. Until he met Lavinia. Lavinia was a female vampire who was over a thousand years old. She was in a coven of five: Lavinia, Elijah, Carlos, Sabrina, and Nicholas. They were all over one thousand years old. They lived peacefully, never alerting the Volturi to anything. But when Lavinia wanted Tanner, she got him. Tanner fought the best he could, but they were all stronger than him. They all felt sorry for Lavinia who had recently lost her mate and wanted to keep Tanner around to keep her sane, but Tanner hated it here. They held him hostage for several years, treating him like a whore and a servant. He kept fighting them, but was too young to do much good. In town one day he met Danna Deville and with a promise of loyalty she and her coven and her allies killed the majority of the coven, leaving only Elijah and Sabrina alive.
