For some reason, I can see Gus taking a protective stance for Emma, probably because he knows that the Devilles aren't the most nurturing family towards Melanie's children, and believes that Emma will need some vampie friends to show her that it's not just the shifters that are nurturing.
Though he will probably warn Melanie that those children will probably eventually shift. He won't stand in the way though, that would be uncalled for.
